# Lindsay Clancy’s Attorney Hit With Devastating News — The Latest Twist Has Everyone Asking What Happens Next The Lindsay Clancy case has already taken another dramatic turn, but the latest controversy is no longer focused only on the defendant. It is now following her attorney, Kevin Reddington. After Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial following roughly a week of jury deliberations, Reddington publicly lashed out at the juror he believed was responsible for preventing the panel from reaching the outcome his client wanted. That confrontation has triggered a new wave of criticism, including calls on social media for Reddington to be disbarred. But the bigger question is what comes next—not only for Clancy, but for the attorney who will likely have to prepare for another trial while facing a controversy of his own. ## The Mistrial Changed Everything The case had reached a critical point after the jury became deeply divided over Clancy's criminal responsibility. According to Reddington, the panel stood at 11-1, with the other jurors prepared to find Clancy not criminally responsible for killing her three children. The unidentified holdout became the focus of an increasingly bitter dispute. Reddington argued that the juror had an improper “agenda” and accused him of effectively robbing Clancy and the rest of the panel of a verdict. After Sullivan ultimately declared a mistrial Friday, Reddington continued that criticism outside Plymouth Superior Court. He ended his remarks with a particularly pointed statement directed at the juror: “I hope that guy can sleep well at night.” That moment would become a major part of the controversy surrounding the defense attorney. ## Why Reddington Is Now Facing Backlash The criticism intensified because jurors' identities had been protected. The juror list was ordered impounded for at least 14 days following the trial, while Reddington had already disclosed during the proceedings that the holdout was male. That narrowed the unidentified juror to one of the three men on the panel. Legal scholar and commentator Jonathan Turley sharply criticized Reddington's conduct. Turley's argument centered on a basic principle of jury deliberations: a juror is not necessarily engaging in misconduct simply because he disagrees with the majority. The controversy was compared to the premise of the classic film *12 Angry Men*, where one juror initially stands against the other 11. The critical distinction, according to Turley's argument, is that a juror has the right to independently decide whether prosecutors have met their burden of proof. A disagreement with the majority, by itself, does not establish an improper agenda. ## The Juror Dispute Had Already Reached the Courts The confrontation outside the courthouse was not the beginning of the dispute. Before the mistrial, Reddington had repeatedly sought an investigation into the juror and ultimately wanted the juror removed. The issue arose after the foreperson reported concerns that one member of the panel was not properly applying the court's instructions concerning reasonable doubt. Judge Sullivan rejected the effort to remove the juror. The judge determined that the information before him did not establish improper bias or provide sufficient legal grounds for interfering with the jury's deliberations. Reddington then took the fight further. He pursued an emergency appeal to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court in an effort to stop Sullivan from declaring a mistrial and force additional consideration of the juror dispute. That effort failed Friday. Sullivan then formally declared the mistrial after approximately a week of deliberations. ## Calls for Disbarment Are Growing—but That Is Not the Same as Discipline The backlash against Reddington has now moved beyond criticism of his courtroom strategy. Social-media users have called for professional discipline, including demands that he be disbarred. But there is an important distinction. The available source reports **calls** for disbarment. It does not report that Reddington has actually been disbarred or that a disciplinary authority has taken such action. That distinction matters, particularly in a case where emotions surrounding the underlying crimes are already extraordinarily intense. For now, the controversy remains a public and professional backlash surrounding Reddington's conduct. ## What Happens to Lindsay Clancy Now? The mistrial does not resolve the criminal case. Instead, Clancy is scheduled to return to court on September 29 while prosecutors and the defense consider the next step. That could place Reddington back in the center of the case very soon. If prosecutors pursue another trial, the defense will have to prepare for a new jury—and Reddington will have to navigate the additional scrutiny generated by his treatment of the first panel's holdout. The second trial could therefore begin under very different circumstances. The defense has already spent years building its case around Clancy's mental state and criminal responsibility. Now, the failure to reach a verdict means those arguments could return before another group of jurors. And the attorney representing Clancy may enter that courtroom carrying an entirely separate controversy. ## The Central Legal Question Has Not Disappeared At the heart of the case remains the question the first jury could not unanimously resolve. Was Clancy criminally responsible for the deaths of her three children? The first trial did not produce a final answer. Instead, the jury's division ultimately resulted in a mistrial. Reddington's claim that the panel was divided 11-1 represents his characterization of the deliberations, not a verdict. The unidentified juror never publicly explained his reasoning, and the court rejected the defense's effort to remove him. That leaves a significant unanswered question heading into the next stage: will another jury reach a unanimous conclusion where the first jury could not? ## A New Trial Could Put Everyone Under a Microscope A retrial would bring renewed attention to the evidence, the competing arguments and the mental-health questions that dominated the original proceedings. But this time, the public spotlight may also follow Reddington more closely. His post-mistrial comments have created a separate story surrounding the defense. The attorney is now dealing with criticism from legal commentators and online calls for professional discipline while potentially preparing to defend Clancy again. That creates an unusual situation. The mistrial was a setback for neither side in the sense of an acquittal or conviction. But the controversy surrounding the defense attorney has become an additional complication that did not exist in quite the same way when the first trial began. ## What Happens Next? For now, the next major date is September 29. That is when Clancy is expected back in court as both sides consider how to proceed after the mistrial. The prosecution could decide to pursue another trial, while the defense could prepare to present its case before a new jury. Meanwhile, questions surrounding Reddington's conduct are likely to continue. Did he cross a professional line by publicly attacking an unidentified juror? Was his criticism simply the reaction of an attorney frustrated by a trial that ended without the result he wanted? And will the controversy have any practical effect on the defense strategy going forward? Those questions remain unresolved. What is clear is that the Lindsay Clancy case is not over. The first jury could not deliver a unanimous verdict. The judge declared a mistrial. Reddington's attempt to challenge the juror dispute failed. And now the defense attorney himself has become the subject of a growing public controversy. With Clancy due back in court on September 29, the next chapter could be just as consequential as the first. And this time, **everyone will be watching not only what happens to Lindsay Clancy—but what happens to the attorney standing beside her.**
