“I’M NOT ON HARRY’S SIDE” — CHARLES SPENCER REVEALS WHERE HE REALLY STANDS AS WILLIAM & HARRY REMAIN ESTRANGED

For years, Charles Spencer has been viewed by some royal watchers as one of the few members of Diana’s family who appears sympathetic to Prince Harry.
Now, he has finally addressed the question directly — and his answer changes the way his position in the William-Harry feud can be understood.
Speaking to the BBC as his new memoir Swan Song: Diana, My Sister prepares for release, Spencer was asked about the perception that he has taken Harry’s side.
His response was striking.
“I think there is a perception in the media that I am on Harry’s side,” Spencer said. “Well, I’m on my deceased sister’s sons’ side, both of them.”
And he did not stop there.
“If either of them wanted anything, then I’d be equally there for them,” he added, making it clear that he does not see himself as a member of either royal camp.
That distinction matters — because William and Harry are still living on opposite sides of one of the royal family’s most painful fractures.
Charles Spencer Refuses to Choose Between Diana’s Sons
Spencer’s comments offer something rarely heard in the increasingly polarized discussion around William and Harry: a deliberate refusal to pick a winner.
He acknowledged that there are “a lot of reasons on both sides” for how the brothers reached their current position.
But rather than explain which brother is responsible, Spencer said he does not know all the details.
“I certainly don’t know what’s been done in the finer detail,” he told the BBC.
That may be the most revealing part of his answer.
Spencer is not simply saying that he loves both nephews. He is also drawing a boundary around how much he believes he should involve himself in their dispute.
He described himself as a “benign figure,” someone who would be there for either brother if needed, rather than someone trying to force a reconciliation.
And there is a deeply personal reason behind that position.
As Diana’s brother, Spencer remembers the two boys not as rival princes at the center of a global family feud, but as the sons of his late sister.
His hope is therefore remarkably simple.
“I hope one day it’s resolved,” he said.
But William and Harry Still Aren’t There
The timing of Spencer’s comments is significant.
Harry has returned to Britain with Meghan Markle and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. The move has put the Sussex family physically much closer to the rest of the royal family than they have been in years.
Yet proximity has not automatically produced reconciliation.
Recent reporting says William and Harry remain estranged, with no direct contact between the brothers. PEOPLE has reported that Harry has expressed a desire for reconciliation, while people close to William and Catherine have indicated that the wounds behind the breakdown remain deep.
That creates an extraordinary situation for Charles Spencer.
His nephews are now both back in the same country, while their relationship remains frozen.
And Spencer appears unwilling to become another person pushing one brother toward the other.
Instead, he is offering something much more cautious: support without choosing sides.
Why Harry Has Often Appeared Closer to Spencer
The perception that Spencer favors Harry did not come from nowhere.
Diana’s death shaped both brothers, but Spencer has also become increasingly outspoken about the way the royal family handled the aftermath of her death.
His new memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, revisits some of the most painful moments surrounding Diana, including disputes over her funeral and claims about conversations involving the then-Prince Charles.
Those revelations have placed Spencer in the middle of another major royal controversy just as Harry and William remain divided.
That can make his relationship with Harry look particularly significant.
But Spencer's latest comments suggest that what he sees is something different.
He is not presenting himself as Harry's ally against William.
He is presenting himself as Diana's brother who refuses to abandon either of her sons.
Spencer Knows There Is More to the Story
There is another fascinating element to his answer.
Spencer openly admitted that he does not know everything that happened between William and Harry.
That is important because public discussion of the feud often reduces the story to competing versions of events.
Harry has publicly described painful moments in his relationship with William. William, by contrast, has largely avoided discussing the dispute publicly.
Spencer appears to recognize that the private reality could be considerably more complicated than what the public has seen.
That is why he stopped short of assigning blame.
He also suggested that becoming more deeply involved could itself be intrusive.
His position is essentially this: if either nephew needs him, he will be there. But the brothers have to deal with their own relationship.
That could make Spencer one of the few people connected to both sides who can still maintain that position without publicly choosing one brother over the other.
And Then There Is Diana
Perhaps the emotional heart of Spencer’s answer was his reference to what Diana would have wanted.
He said he would feel intrusive getting more involved than simply observing that “a mother would want her two sons to be happy together and love each other.”
It is difficult to imagine a more direct connection between the current feud and the family tragedy that sits behind it.
William and Harry were still teenagers when Diana died in 1997.
Spencer was there as their maternal uncle during one of the most traumatic periods of their lives.
Nearly three decades later, the brothers remain divided — and Spencer is now writing about the same family history that shaped all three of them.
That gives his latest comments a significance beyond a simple “I support both sides” statement.
He is effectively saying that Diana’s sons are more important to him than the arguments surrounding them.
Harry Has One Relationship That Has Changed
While William and Harry remain estranged, the wider royal picture is not completely frozen.
Harry’s relationship with his father, King Charles, has shown signs of movement.
Charles reunited with Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet at Highgrove earlier this year, and recent reporting has described contact between father and son. At the same time, the Palace has maintained a clear distinction between Harry’s private family relationship and his status as a non-working royal.
William is a different story.
The brothers remain separated despite Harry’s return to Britain.
And that is precisely why Spencer’s neutrality may matter.
He is not trying to turn Harry’s return into a royal comeback.
He is not publicly demanding that William forgive his brother.
He is simply leaving the door open for both.
What Charles Spencer Is Really Saying
The headline may suggest that Spencer has finally declared himself against Harry.
His actual words are more complicated — and arguably more revealing.
He did not say he was abandoning Harry.
He said he would be there for Harry.
But he also said he would be there for William.
That puts Spencer in a very different position from the competing narratives that often surround the brothers.
He is not saying, “Harry is right.”
He is not saying, “William is right.”
He is saying that he does not know every private detail, does not want to intrude, and hopes the two brothers eventually find their way back to one another.
And with Swan Song now arriving as William and Harry remain estranged, Spencer’s words may carry an even greater emotional weight.
Because after everything that has happened, his message is remarkably simple:
He does not want to choose between Diana’s sons.
May you like
He wants both of them to be happy.
And for now, that may be the closest thing to a royal peace message coming from Diana’s family.
