Massachusetts Sparks New National Abortion Debate

Massachusetts Approves Controversial Abortion Bill, Setting the Stage for Another National Showdown

One of the nation's most closely watched abortion debates has taken another dramatic turn.

Massachusetts lawmakers have approved legislation that would significantly reshape the state's abortion laws, marking one of the biggest policy changes since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022.

The bill now heads to Democratic Governor Maura Healey, who has consistently supported abortion rights and is expected to decide whether the proposal becomes law.

If signed, supporters say the legislation would give physicians greater flexibility when treating patients facing serious pregnancy complications.

Opponents argue it would substantially broaden access to abortions later in pregnancy by replacing the state's current legal framework with a standard based primarily on a physician's professional medical judgment.

Under existing Massachusetts law, abortion is generally legal through the first 24 weeks of pregnancy. After that point, state law permits abortions only under specific circumstances, including when necessary to protect the life or health of the mother or when the fetus has a condition making survival outside the womb unlikely.

The newly approved legislation would replace those detailed statutory requirements with a broader standard allowing physicians to rely on their professional judgment when determining whether an abortion after 24 weeks is appropriate.
