Those “Travelin’ Thru” Nashville, Tenn.’s main airport may soon be touching down at Dolly Parton International.

On Friday, Aug. 28, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and Nashville International Airport (BNA) announced plans to rename the facility to honor the late Dolly Parton. According to a joint press release, the governor spoke with Parton’s team and “they are touched by the idea and open to continuing the conversation.”

The announcement comes just three days after the country music icon, actress and philanthropist died on Tuesday, Aug. 25 at age 80. Her team later confirmed to PEOPLE she died after a “brief battle with cancer.”

“Dolly Parton’s extraordinary life is forever woven into the fabric of our state,” Lee said in a statement. “At a place where Tennessee welcomes the world, it is fitting that Nashville International Airport would bear the name of our state’s favorite daughter and greet travelers with the enduring legacy of Dolly’s music, generosity, faith, and kindness.”

Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell also threw his support behind the change with a statement on social media: “Dolly was in the process of working with us on a remarkable hotel and museum — SongTeller — that she called her love letter to Nashville. Now it’s our turn to share a love letter to Dolly — by renaming Nashville International Airport to Dolly Parton International Airport in Nashville.”

According to the announcement, the Metro Nashville Airport Authority’s (MNAA) current naming policy and Gov.Gov. Lee’s proposal to rename the airport will be discussed at MNAA’s meeting on Sept. 17. Officials added that more details will be announced in the coming weeks.

The announcement was made the same day as a plane towing a banner reading “Change.org/DollyPartonAirport” flew high above the Tennessee State Capitol and Nashville’s Broadway strip. The aerial billboard was the latest push to support an ongoing petition to rename the airport after the Steel Magnolias star.

In January 2025, Tennessee residents Lydia Popovich and Dan Dion started a Change.org petition entitled “Rename Nashville International Airport to Dolly Parton International Airport.” Following the star’s death, the organizers say the campaign was “reinvigorated.” As of the afternoon of Aug. 28, the petition had amassed over 150,000 signatures.

The campaign even went on to catch the attention of one of Parton’s collaborators.
