Trump Floats Renaming Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait” as Iran War Continues

President Donald Trump has a new name in mind for one of the world’s most strategically important waterways—and this time, it would carry his own name.

In a Truth Social post on Wednesday, September 2, Trump suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait,” as the war involving Iran continues and tensions surrounding the critical shipping route remain high.

“Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT???” Trump wrote.

He added that, like America itself, the waterway would be “hotter” than ever before.

Trump’s proposal comes at a politically sensitive moment.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important energy corridors in the world. Located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, the narrow waterway has long been a major route for international oil shipments and a strategically important area for military operations.

Any disruption there can have consequences far beyond the region.

Iran has repeatedly closed or restricted traffic through the strait during the conflict, contributing to higher oil and gas prices and increasing concerns over the security of commercial shipping.

On Wednesday, Iran also blacklisted more than 40 oil transport vessels, according to Reuters, a move that could further complicate efforts to move oil through the waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz has therefore become one of the central pressure points in the ongoing conflict.

And Trump's proposed name change comes as public support for the war has reportedly weakened.

A July Politico poll found a 13-point decline in support for the war among Trump's own voter base compared with the beginning of the conflict in February, when the United States and Israel launched large-scale airstrikes against Iran.

That makes Trump's latest post notable not simply because of the unusual name itself, but because of the political moment in which he made the suggestion.

Trump has already made renaming geographic landmarks part of his administration's broader agenda.

In January 2025, he moved to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.”

More recently, on August 27, Trump signed an executive order calling for Lake Ontario, one of the Great Lakes, to be renamed “Lake America” on U.S. maps.

That move immediately triggered opposition from officials on both sides of the U.S.-Canada border.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul criticized the change, while Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also voiced opposition.
