WE TRIED TO FIX THIS” — WHAT REALLY HAPPENED WHEN HARRY & MEGHAN SAT DOWN WITH WILLIAM & KATE?

“WE TRIED TO FIX THIS.”

Four people. One family. Years of resentment, accusations and silence.

And now, one question is hanging over the Sussexes’ return to Britain:

Did Harry and Meghan actually sit down with William and Kate to try to repair the relationship — and if they did, what happened behind closed doors?

The answer is more complicated than the dramatic headlines suggest.

Because while reports have described discussions about arranging a face-to-face meeting between the two couples, there is no public confirmation that such a four-way meeting actually took place.

And that may be the most revealing part of the story.

The Meeting Everyone Is Waiting For

When Harry and Meghan returned to Britain, the possibility of a family reconciliation suddenly became much harder to ignore.

For years, the physical distance between California and Britain made private reconciliation difficult.

Now that distance is gone.

Harry and Meghan are living in the U.K. with Archie and Lilibet. The children have started school there. Harry has resumed public appearances. King Charles has already met the entire Sussex family at Highgrove.

But one relationship remains stubbornly frozen:

Harry and William.

Recent reporting has described the brothers as still deeply estranged, with no meaningful direct contact reported between them. That has made the idea of a face-to-face meeting with William and Kate one of the biggest unanswered questions surrounding Harry’s return.

And in September, that possibility suddenly moved from fantasy to reported discussion.

William and Kate Were Reportedly Considering a Meeting

A report published by Woman & Home on September 13 said royal biographer Duncan Larcombe had described discussions about bringing Harry and William face-to-face.

According to a source cited by the publication, William was “extremely concerned” about what Harry’s return to Britain could mean for the working members of the Royal Family.

The report suggested that senior royals might feel they had little choice but to ask Harry for a meeting to discuss the future and establish — or re-establish — boundaries.

That is a very different story from saying the meeting already happened.

But it raises an explosive possibility.

What if William and Kate were not simply waiting for Harry to make the first move?

What if they were considering sitting across the table from him precisely because the current arrangement had become impossible to ignore?

“We Tried to Fix This” — But Who Was Trying?

This is where the story becomes much more interesting.

Harry has repeatedly expressed a desire for reconciliation with his family.

In 2025, he told the BBC that he wanted reconciliation and saw little point in continuing to fight with his family.

That desire has not necessarily translated into reconciliation with William.

The brothers’ relationship has remained one of the most damaged parts of the Windsor family story.

Meanwhile, William has been described as far more cautious.

That difference matters.

Harry may want the door reopened.

William may want to know exactly what happens after the door opens.

And that is why a hypothetical meeting between William, Kate, Harry and Meghan would be so sensitive.

It would not simply be four family members having tea.

It could become a conversation about trust, privacy, royal duties, public statements, the children and the future role of the Sussexes.

Kate Could Be the Crucial Figure

Kate’s position makes the possibility even more intriguing.

Earlier reports suggested that Catherine had encouraged William to see Harry and his family during their return to Britain. That report, published by Extra, was based on unnamed sources cited by Us Weekly.

That does not establish that Kate actually arranged a meeting.

But it does create an important contrast with the image of William simply refusing to engage.

If Kate believes the brothers should at least attempt to repair their relationship, she could potentially serve as a stabilizing presence between them.

But there is another possibility.

Kate could also be part of a conversation about boundaries.

Because reconciliation does not necessarily mean restoring the relationship to what it was before.

Sometimes reconciliation means agreeing on what the relationship can realistically become.

And that may be exactly where Harry and William now stand.

Charles Has Already Shown What Reconciliation Looks Like

There is a major clue in what happened with King Charles.

In July, Charles hosted Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet at Highgrove.

It was a private family reunion, and Buckingham Palace did not release photographs or details of what was discussed. The meeting was nevertheless described by the Associated Press as a step toward repairing the family rift.

Queen Camilla was also present.

People later emphasized that Camilla remains a central part of Charles’s life and that any reconciliation involving the King cannot realistically be separated from her presence.

But notice what did not happen.

William was not part of that reunion.

That distinction may explain why a future William-Harry meeting would carry so much more weight.

Charles can rebuild a father-son relationship.

William and Harry have to confront something different:

brotherhood, betrayal and the future of the monarchy.

Then Came the Royal Status Line

The situation became even more complicated after Harry and Meghan returned permanently to Britain.

In September, Buckingham Palace formally clarified that the couple remain non-working royals, with their HRH styles in abeyance and their charitable activities carried out privately.

The timing reportedly surprised the Sussexes.

And that matters because it establishes the institutional boundary before any hypothetical reconciliation between the brothers.

Harry can be welcomed as family.

But that does not mean he is being invited back as a working royal.

That distinction may be exactly what William would want any future conversation to acknowledge.

What Would They Actually Have to Fix?

If Harry, Meghan, William and Kate ever do sit down together, the biggest problem may not be the arguments of the past.

It may be what happens next.

Trust.

Can private conversations remain private?

Can disagreements stay inside the family?

Can Harry and William communicate without old grievances becoming public?

Can Meghan and Kate coexist without being dragged into the brothers’ conflict?

And perhaps most importantly:

What role, if any, should Harry and Meghan have in the wider royal story?

These are much harder questions than simply asking whether two brothers can forgive each other.

The “Sandringham” Problem

There is another reason the reported meeting idea has attracted so much attention.

The reports compare the possibility to the 2020 Sandringham discussions, when the Royal Family tried to determine what Harry and Meghan’s future would look like after they stepped back from royal duties.

That comparison is revealing.

The original problem was:

Could Harry and Meghan remain partly inside the institution and partly outside it?

The answer ultimately became no.

Now, six years later, the Sussexes are back in Britain.

But the question has returned in a different form:

Can Harry and Meghan live close to the Royal Family without creating confusion about where they fit within it?

That is precisely the kind of issue William may want clarified.

The Four-Way Meeting Still Has One Huge Problem

There is something important readers should not lose sight of.

As of the latest reporting, there is no confirmed evidence that William, Kate, Harry and Meghan have already held the dramatic face-to-face meeting described in the headline.

What has been reported is the possibility of such a meeting, with royal commentators discussing whether William and Kate might feel compelled to initiate one.

That distinction changes the story — but it does not kill it.

If anything, it creates a bigger question.

Why would such a meeting even be necessary now?

Because Harry’s return has changed the geography of the family.

The Sussexes are no longer six thousand miles away.

They are back in Britain.

Their children are in British schools.

Harry is appearing publicly again.

Charles has reopened a private family channel.

And William is still standing at the other end of the deepest unresolved royal rift.

What If They Never Sit Down?

That may be the darker possibility.

A family can live in the same country and still remain completely divided.

Harry can see his father.

Archie and Lilibet can grow up closer to their royal relatives.

Meghan can build a private life in Britain.

And yet William and Harry could remain exactly where they were before Harry returned.

Separated not by an ocean this time —

but by a boundary.

That would make the Sussex return far more complicated than a simple homecoming.

Because the biggest obstacle may never have been geography.

It may have been trust.

“We Tried to Fix This”

Perhaps that is why the phrase “We tried to fix this” is so powerful as a headline.

Not because it has been established as something William, Kate, Harry or Meghan actually said.

But because it captures the question now hanging over the family.

What happens when everyone finally sits down?

Does Harry ask William to forgive him?

Does William demand boundaries?

Does Kate try to calm the room?

Does Meghan defend Harry?

Or does everyone simply realize that the relationship they once had cannot be rebuilt in exactly the same form?

For now, the public does not have the answer.

What we do know is that reports have moved beyond simply asking whether William and Harry will ever reconcile. There is now discussion of whether a direct meeting may be necessary to define what their relationship — and the Sussexes’ place around the monarchy — should look like.

And that could be far more consequential than one emotional reunion.

Because Harry has already come home.

The real question is whether William is ready to let him back into the family circle — and, if he is, where exactly that circle ends.
