Chapter 8 - The Kill Box

Midnight at Pier 41 was a graveyard of rusting shipping containers, saltwater fog, and creeping shadows. The smell of dead fish and diesel oil hung heavy in the damp air.
Mave walked down the center of the wooden dock, her heart pounding a frantic, suicidal rhythm against her ribs. She was wearing a black tactical jacket Elias had given her, the diamond ring still heavy on her left hand. She felt entirely exposed, a sitting duck in a shooting gallery.
She walked alone.
At the end of the pier, illuminated by the harsh, yellow glare of a halogen floodlight, stood Viktor Volkov. He was surrounded by six heavily armed men. Khloe was kneeling on the wet wood beside him, gagged and sobbing.
"Stop right there, little bird," Volkov called out, his voice echoing over the crashing waves.
Mave stopped. She was thirty feet away. Every instinct screamed at her to turn and run, but she locked her knees and stood tall, channeling every ounce of Rowan Mercer’s terrifying composure.
"Let her go, Volkov," Mave shouted, her voice remarkably steady. "You wanted me. I'm here."
Volkov smiled, a cruel, reptilian stretching of his lips. He pulled a silver revolver from his coat and pressed the barrel against Khloe’s temple. Khloe squeezed her eyes shut, a muffled scream tearing through her gag.
"You are a brave girl, Mave," Volkov purred. "But I must admit, I am disappointed. I expected Rowan to come charging in on a white horse. Has he abandoned you so easily? Did the great Mercer finally realize a baker isn't worth a war?"
"He didn't abandon me," Mave said softly.
Volkov frowned. "What did you say?"
"I said," Mave raised her chin, her eyes flashing with a dangerous, triumphant light. "He didn't abandon me."
Before Volkov could process her words, the ocean itself seemed to explode.
Two matte-black tactical boats, running completely dark and silent, erupted from the fog directly behind Volkov’s position. A blinding spotlight flared to life, hitting Volkov’s men with the intensity of a dying sun.
"Now!" Rowan’s voice roared through a megaphone.
Gunfire shredded the night. It wasn't a shootout; it was an execution. Rowan’s snipers, hidden in the rusted cranes above the pier, took out Volkov’s six guards in perfect, synchronized strikes before their bodies even hit the wood.
Volkov stumbled back, shocked, raising his revolver toward Mave.
He never pulled the trigger.
A bullet the size of a cigar tore through Volkov’s shoulder, spinning him violently to the ground. His gun clattered off the edge of the pier and vanished into the dark water.
From the shadows of the shipping containers, Rowan Mercer emerged.
He didn't run. He walked with the slow, terrifying grace of the Grim Reaper. He held a custom, smoking hand cannon at his side. The tactical teams swarmed the pier, securing the perimeter, but Rowan only had eyes for Volkov.
Mave sprinted forward, dropping to her knees and tearing the gag from Khloe’s mouth.
"Mave! Oh my god, Mave!" Khloe sobbed hysterically, burying her face in Mave’s shoulder.
"I've got you. You're safe," Mave choked out, holding her friend tight.
Rowan stepped over the bodies of the dead guards and stood above Volkov. The Russian mob boss was clutching his shattered shoulder, coughing up blood, his pale eyes wide with disbelief.
"You broke the rules of engagement, Viktor," Rowan said quietly, his voice colder than the ocean wind. "You brought a civilian into our war."
"You... you are a dead man, Mercer," Volkov spat, blood staining his teeth. "The Chicago syndicate will never stop—"
"I already bought Chicago," Rowan interrupted smoothly. "An hour ago. They sold you out for a ten percent stake in my shipping routes. You have no allies, Viktor. You have nothing."
Rowan raised the gun, aiming directly between Volkov’s eyes.
"This is for touching what is mine," Rowan whispered.
The gunshot echoed over the water, definitive and final.
Mave flinched, closing her eyes tight. When she opened them, Rowan had already turned away from the body. He holstered his weapon and walked toward her. His dark eyes softened as he looked down at her kneeling on the wet dock, holding a traumatized Khloe.
"Elias," Rowan commanded. "Get Khloe to a safe house. Give her a new name and a million dollars. She never comes back to this city."
"Understood, Boss." Elias gently lifted Khloe, leading the sobbing girl toward the waiting boats.
Rowan reached down, offering Mave his hand. She looked at his large, calloused palm—the hand of a killer, a monster, and the man who had just burned the world down to save her.

She took it. He pulled her up, pulling her flush against his chest, wrapping his arms around her tightly as the flashing lights of the tactical boats illuminated the fog. For the first time since that night in the dive bar, Mave felt completely, unconditionally safe.
